TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA, August 3, 1999 -- Conduits Technologies
Inc. released PalmPlayer beta 3 today for Windows CE
Palm-size PCs. PalmPlayer is an MP3 player for
the devices, powered by the XAudio MP3 engine.
The new version introduces many features not found in
other players, including the ability to shut off
the LCD backlight that powers the new color Palm-size
PCs, thereby saving huge amounts of battery power for
longer MP3 sessions. This feature is implemented
alongside of PalmPlayer's disabling of Windows CE's
auto-poweroff feature, which normally helps with
conserving battery usage, but is irritating when
using the device as a standalone player.
Auto poweroff disabling is supported on all Palm-size PCs, and
the disabling of the backlight is supported on several
of the new Wyvern (color) Palm-size PCs, including Casio's
E100 and E500 series devices, and the Hewlett Packard
Jornada 420 series devices.
As with beta 2, PalmPlayer supports a fully skinnable
interface (not merely bitmap replacements), as well as
tight interaction with the Palm-size PC hardware buttons,
playlist support, and a fullscreen display (optional).
PalmPlayer beta 3 is available for free from the
Conduits website (http://www.conduits.com/), and
will expire on 11 August 1999, at which point the
final version will be available for an estimated
retail cost of $9.95. Documentation and a skin
library will also be online at that time.
Conduits develops several other commercial applications for
Windows CE, including PalmBrowser (an online web browser for
P/PC), PalmFlash, TaskSwitcher, and PalmKeys, and several open source
efforts, such as CoPilot for Palm-size PC.
